Somei-yoshino

"Tidings of spring"

The most commonly known cherry blossom in Japan. It is said that the name comes from a gardener in the Edo era (17th-19th century) in the village of Somei. The gardener started distributing the cultivar under the name "Yoshino." Since the growth of Somei-yoshino is fast, it soon became a popular cultivar nationwide for ornamental use.
